Good Beer Hunting

187. Read. Look. Drink.

These are the words, images, and beers that inspired the GBH Collective this week. Drinking alone just got better, because now you're drinking with all of us.

READ.// “This isn’t a town where you can steal a piece of bubble gum without everyone knowing about it. [...] There was no arroyo left unturned, and no trace of him found.” The New York Times published this article last week about the mysterious 1975 disappearance of Jim Sullivan, just a few hours east of where I grew up in New Mexico. The article is sweet and simple and contains some of the most New Mexican-sounding quotes I've ever read. Upon finishing I was immediately sent into a spiraling bender of homesickness and psych-folk meanderings.

LOOK.// Step 1: Buy tickets to see Gatecreeper on their fall co-headlining tour with Exhumed, Necrot, and Judiciary
Step 2: Go to the show
Step 3: Pick a riff
Step 4: Peel your own face off amidst the riff

DRINK.// Logsdon Farmhouse Ales’ Vulgar Display of Sour Sour IPA
I happily nursed a small pour of Logsdon's Vulgar Display of Sour while making arts and crafts hand turkeys with my friends last weekend. But I would also recommend slamming one in the middle of a Dimebag solo.

ASHLEY RODRIGUEZ

READ.// Plenty of outlets have written that, thanks to Holzhauer, ‘Jeopardy!’ is now broken. But there’s art in that. While the game may look a bit different than it did before, it may also be closer to perfection — to an ideal expression of trivia game-show strategy. Broken is beautiful.” I’m ridiculously obsessed with “Jeopardy!”—it’s pretty much all I think about. “Jeopardy!” recently announced a Greatest of All Time Tournament between Ken Jennings (who won a record 74 games), Brad Rutter (who has never been beaten by a human player), and James Holzhauer (who single-handedly reinvented the way the game is played). While some might say Holzhauer broke the game, I think he’s positioned himself as the most innovative and interesting player to challenge the game ever. My money is on him beating Jennings and Rutter and I’m totally comfortable putting that on the internet for all to see.

LOOK.// My friends Nick and Trish own a coffee shop and roastery called Wrecking Ball Coffee in the Bay Area (you might have heard Nick on our podcast). I went to visit their newest location, and I took a selfie in front of their popular pineapple wall, featuring wallpaper from Rifle Paper Co. I’m sort of a coffee curmudgeon, but it was delightful to sit for a moment and shoot silly photos of myself. It made me miss the Bay Area and its wonderful coffee community.

DRINK.// Goose Island 312
“Do we have … just beer?” my boyfriend asked this weekend. A benefit of working for a beer website is that you get to taste and take home some of the most special beers you can dream of. But sometimes, you want something you can crush after a run at the gym or as you cook dinner. I have such a soft spot for 312—it’s the beer I’d drink at Mets games in New York, nostalgic for the Windy City. Now that I’m back in Chicago, I sometimes forget how easily available it is. Picking up a six-pack felt like the exceedingly right way to spend a weekend lounging around the house and being content with being home.

JIM PLACHY

READ.// “I finished my whiskey and Coke—my eighth overall alcoholic beverage of the night—and tried mightily to talk my way into a ninth, but Butler would not be moved. As he left the building he waved his hand across his neck, giving the signal to staff that I was done for the night. I departed shortly after.” This hilarious investigation into what it’s like to drink at St. Louis' new all-you-can-drink bar includes a great anecdote about why you shouldn't use social media to brag about gaming a system.

LOOK.// I followed James Hoffmann's V60 technique this morning and I feel like every cup of coffee I made at home for the last three years has been a waste of great coffee.

DRINK.// City Water’s Valencia Orange & Cranberry Hard Seltzer
I bought these to serve to people who didn't want to drink beer on Thanksgiving, and lucky for me only a couple cans got drank. Now I've spent almost every night since sipping on this delicious melange of cranberry and orange. It’s the perfect light beverage for a crisp fall night.
