Good Beer Hunting

173. Read. Look. Drink.

These are the words, images, and beers that inspired the GBH Collective this week. Drinking alone just got better, because now you're drinking with all of us.

READ. // "Open a window? Dust is coming in. Go outside? Dust is coming in. Move, at all? You’re probably sloughing off some kind of material — that’s dust." Jeremy Gordon of The Outline compares the futility of dusting with the human condition. I'm apt to agree, but I'll remain complicit in this idle task because I am a glutton for punishment.

LOOK. // Pulling when you need to push; the burden of an unfamiliar door. There is something so satisfying about former SNL writer Tim Robinson's stubborn determination in this very short, very funny skit about saving face in front of a potential employer from his sketch show "I Think You Should Leave."

DRINK. // Central State Brewing’s Table Beer
If there is a more flavorful, tangy, joyful little can than Central State's Table Beer, I haven't found it. A French- and Belgian-inspired Table Beer, this little beauty brings new meaning to summer weeknight porch drinking. It's prickly, incredibly complex, and slow to saturate your bloodstream. I'm lucky the convenience store a few doors down has had a steady stream of this delight all season.

READ. // "Nothing about the bowl seemed different from what you could buy at Crate & Barrel, but her enthusiasm for it seemed profound, and I didn’t want to disappoint her by distrusting the bowl’s potential." I'll read House Culture alum Amanda Mull on just about anything, but this deep dive on Goop was especially special.

LOOK. // Nobody does opulence quite like Aubrey Drake Graham. So it's no wonder, then, that his video for "Money in the Grave" paints the author and his collaborator Rick Ross as mafia dons, all bathed in black and white, backlit by fireworks, and busy tending to large glasses of wine.

DRINK. // Monday Night Brewing's Tie 8 On
Over the weekend, I had an appropriately portioned eight ounces of this barrel-aged Strong Ale made for Monday Night's eighth anniversary. A blend of eight different barrel-aged beers, this complex and rewarding beverage is all subtle dessert notes and warming booze—it checks a lot of boxes.

READ. // "The Cordova Cat Burglar, the Visalia Ransacker, the East Area Rapist, the Creek Killer, the Diamond Knot Killer, the original Night Stalker.” These are just a handful of names eventually tied to one person: the Golden State Killer. His crimes, and subsequent capture 40 years later, shows both the power of investigative work and the way pride and incompetence can get in the way of serving justice.

LOOK. // I said “Los Espookys” is the funniest show I’ve ever seen on our GBH Slack page—and no one responded. I’ll just have to assume they’ve never seen it. If you like the weirdly whimsical sketches that have bubbled out of SNL in recent years (like this one for the most dramatic of all payment types: cheques), you have Julio Torres, co-creator of “Los Espookys,” to thank.

DRINK. // Goose Island’s Lost Palate
"An unfortunate consequence of battling cancer was losing the ability to taste many flavors. I almost completely lost my palate. The only things I could still taste were mangos and oats with cinnamon. I’m happy to say I’m now a survivor!” I generally stay away from IPAs, especially if I’m just grabbing a quick beer with my coworkers at the end of the day, but you can’t resist a story like this. Made in honor of one of Goose Island’s brand ambassadors, this beer is all types of tasty.
