Good Beer Hunting

152. Read. Look. Drink.

These are the words, images, and beers that inspired the GBH Collective this week. Drinking alone just got better, because now you're drinking with all of us.

READ. // "The weekly miracle occurs at an event you could call the Peaceful Community Gathering on Wheels, but is actually named the Ciclovía." Every Sunday from 7am to 2pm, Colombia's capital city of Bogotá bans the use of motor vehicles. Turns out, it's not just good for the climate—it’s good for the people, too.

LOOK. // The winners of the 2018 SkyPixel Aerial Photo & Video Contest are simply stunning, providing completely alien views of the planet we call home.

DRINK. // Bauhaus Brew Labs’ Wonderstuff Neü Bohemian Pilsner
After a weekend full of Hazy IPAs, ballpark brats, and a few Jucy Lucys, the crispness of this Pils provided my palate with exactly what I needed to round out a great trip to Minneapolis. Stay tuned for a travel piece that captures the whole ordeal.

READ. // "But this is the blissful part of the night — when you’re drunk enough to lean into spectacle, forget whatever article you’ve read on the side effects of gentrification, and neglect your best intentions to only go to the ‘authentic’ honky-tonks, rather than the ones that have the best call-and-response drinking games." Anne Helen Petersen's piece in BuzzFeed about Nashville's ever-expanding bachelorette-party scene is a fascinating (and cringe-worthy) look at what's happening to so many cities around the country.

LOOK. // I love Joe Coscarelli's series of FaceTime interviews with artists in The New York Times, especially since I'm too old or uncool to otherwise have come across many of them. Here, he talks with Billie Eilish about how her creepy-cool track "Bury a Friend" came to be—dentist sound-effects and all.

DRINK. // Cloudwater Brew Co's A•W18 One-Off Märzen
On Monday, I took part in a beer off-flavor training session. On the one hand, it was useful, but on the other hand—after glass upon glass of nasty, contaminated beer—my mouth tasted like a dank, dirty attic. Cloudwater's Märzen was the first proper beer I had afterwards, and the tonic I needed to wash away lingering traces of ferrous sulfate and hydrogen sulfide and TCA. Rich with malt but wonderfully clean, it undid all the willful damage I'd done to myself.

READ. // Amongst other things, he was “a brilliant entrepreneur, a bridge builder, a philanthropist, a community activist and a spiritual compass, a fearless truth teller, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a powerful symbol of the possibilities in life.” RIP, Nipsey Hussle.

LOOK. // I saw Us this week and it was truly fantastic. Here’s the trailer. You should go see it, too.

DRINK. // Monday Night Brewing’s Bourbon Barrel-Aged Drafty Kilt
It’s kinda bonkers that I can just go to my local bottle shop and pick of a four pack of this beer in 12-ounce cans. But here we are again, me drinking one, feeling good about life. It’s “rich” and “decadent” as advertised right there on the packaging, and it warms me in a way I know I’ll only get to appreciate for a few more weeks before ATL gets swampy.
