074. Read.Look.Drink.

These are the words, images, and beers that inspired the GBH collective this week. Drinking alone just got better, because now you're drinking with all of us.

READ. // "Many of your competitors learned their trade in the family, or by apprenticing with farms that make their discomfort with non-White employees clear, if not explicit. The older farmers are part of one club that enjoys conservative-libertarian politics, Bluegrass, and Sunday school; the younger farmers are part of another club that enjoys yoga, artisan coffee houses, democratic socialism, and whipping out the guitar at house parties. Your Black ass belongs to neither." Charlottesville resident Chris Newman gives an unvarnished account as his experience as a person of color that farms.

LOOK. // Elle Davies creates magic with her photos of deep sections of the forest blended with pictures of Milky Way, Omega Centauri, and the Norma Galaxy.

DRINK. // Nebraska Brewing Company's Inception Series Franc Blanc
Hazy with a bit of wood flavor leads before a refreshing Sauvignon Blanc forward flavor comes through. Pretty darn good.

READ. // "Place a finger anywhere on the globe, and I guarantee you that the local cuisine features some kind of pickled something." The other day I bought some baby cucumbers from my local greengrocer and shoved them in a jar with a bunch of vinegar, herbs, and spices. Then I read this fantastic piece on pickling by Christina Ward. My second attempt will be sharper than my first.

LOOK. // This series of 35mm photographs by Zack Vitiello, entitled "Long Time, No See," provides a still, almost eerie look into urban China.

DRINK. // Beavertown Brewery's Tempus Project Moonshiner
With all the excitement leading up to the Beavertown Extravaganza this weekend, I've found myself drinking a lot of their beer. This bourbon barrel-aged Berliner Weisse expertly imitates the puckering acidity and warming bourbon you'd find in a really great whiskey sour.

READ. // "He made the paintings in New York, under light we will never know; he never saw what they would look like under Texas’ expansive sky." Published just before the tragedy in Houston, this beautiful and solemn reflection on loss is pitch perfect in addressing the heroism and solidarity of the area.

LOOK. // Jonathan Chapman works with a wide variety of clients—from dog food to health care to automotive—providing photography and video direction. His work for Texas BBQ, however, is a true standout—just like the barbecue itself.

DRINK. // Jester King Brewery's SPON Albariño & Blanc Du Bois
Far and away the best beer I tasted at the Shelton Brothers Festival. It drinks more like a wine than anything else, with a complex balance of young grapes, funk, and citrus zest. Absolutely beautiful.
