Good Beer Hunting

171. Read. Look. Drink.

These are the words, images, and beers that inspired the GBH Collective this week. Drinking alone just got better, because now you're drinking with all of us.

READ. // "It’s mud, but it’s an essential piece of a multibillion-dollar business, a feature without which an official baseball game cannot be played." This fascinating, quirky little story is a Venn diagram of two of my deepest personal interests: baseball and esoterica.

LOOK. // A man gets off a boat, walks into a restaurant and orders albatross soup. He takes one sip, pulls out a gun, and shoots himself to death. Why did he kill himself? Winnie Cheung reveals the answer in this weird, trippy, animated short.

DRINK. // Urban Artifact’s Malbec Brut Fruit Tart Ale
The makeup of this beverage is 70% beer and 30% Malbec juice, but the taste inverts those percentages and leaves the palate a little befuddled—in a good way. It's the first offering in Urban Artifact's new wine/beer hybrid line and I, for one, can't wait to see what they do next.

READ. // "The opening credits for Alien are nothing short of a typographic masterpiece." Typeset in the Future uses meticulous screenshots from beloved sci-fi movies to illustrate the historical importance of typeface choices in popular culture. This blog comes to mind each time I feel like a massive tool for overthinking a dumb font I'm seeing out in the wild.

LOOK. // I recently had the chance to relive my teenage angst for several hours during Slipknot's tour stop here in Chicago. I saw lots of sweaty weirdos and dudes screaming and banging on trashcans...which generally sounds truly, truly awful but I had the biggest smile on my face the whole night. Slipknot opened with "People = Shit" and it was tiiiiiiight.

DRINK. // Off Color Brewing’s Tooth and Claw Dry Hopped Lager
There is a certain shame that comes with spending $60+ on one or two—or five or six—24oz cans of Miller Lite while watching a metal band play in an amphitheater. Off Color Brewing's Tooth and Claw Dry-Hopped Lager is the perfect shower beer to wash away that feeling.

READ. // "I became like a kite with a string but no anchor. No one could understand what I was talking about. And I thought people would rather see me as an orangutan than as an eagle meditating on the mountaintop." This Nicolas Cage interview is one wild ride.

LOOK. // The secret to a long, rewarding life where you never get bored is this: you gotta zig when they zag.

DRINK. // Orpheus Brewing's An Air Portends
This Imperial Stout aged 14 months in bourbon barrels with macadamia nuts and vanilla and the quintessentially Orpheus name is juuuuust verging on the edge of too indulgent for my blood. And yet. As it starts to warm a little and I take another sip, I can almost—almost!—envision a world where there's not a heat index of 105°.
